A New Water Game With Children

To make the students clearer about our idea,
today we went to two schools that we had
already been to. The first one was a
catholic school, the
SD Al-Muslim Wadungasri school. It’s nice
for me to meet the lovely children again.
Since last time we haven’t got enough time,
we just did our presentation in a hurry.
However, they told me that the other day
they had tried to make a filter by
themselves after my presentation. Also, they
remember a lot of what I taught them about
water.

Greenhouse Gasses Game

This morning we go to a catholic
elementary school. Since we have been there
last week and have already given them
presentation, we make a review with them
today. Firstly, we ask them what is global
warming and what causes global warming. It
seems that they still remember a few of the
things relating to carbon footprint which we
told them last week, but forget a lot. So we
show them the global warming cartoon movie
again. And Michael go through the
presentation again with the kids there.
After this, Michael asks them to write a
letter to parents, or the headmaster of
school, or president of Indonesia, or media.

Students To Make Water Filtration

Shelly and I also did a presentation about
water for them. Although some students there
were too shy to communicate with us, most of
them were willing to tell us what they know
about water. Before I went to the school, I
prepared some sands, gravels, stones, bottle
and fabric.

siswa SDN Kertajaya Pucang Jajar (Puja)
Surabaya mengikuti workshop carbon
footprint atau jejak karbon yang digelar
Tunas Hijau di SDN Kertajaya Puja , Selasa
(28/7). Pada workshop ini, para siswa SDN
Kertajaya Puja dibekali pemahaman tentang
aktivitas manusia yang menghasilkan
karbondioksida. Selain pengenalan aktivitas
manusia yang menghasilkan karbon secara
global, Tunas Hijau juga mengenal aktivitas
manusia yang menghasilkan karbon di
lingkungan sekolah, juga menentukan
langkah-langkah penyelesaian permasalahan
tersebut.

New Concept of
Environment Workshop, It Was Worked

Today we continued to go to the elementary
school SD Al Muslim Wadungasri. It was the
best Muslim school I have ever seen in
Indonesia. The school was well equipped and
had a large campus. The students there were
cute and smart and the teachers could speak
good English. That’s really convenient for
our activities. In this school we adopted
the new teaching methods that Roni had
suggested us to use yesterday. Evidently it
worked!

 Kunjungan
ke redaksi Jawa Pos di lantai 4 Graha Pena
Surabaya, Kamis (23/7), membawa kesan bagi 8
mahasiswa China simpatisan Tunas Hijau.
Mereka adalah Zhao Qinhao, Linyujiao, Sun
Yifeng, Li Hao, Wu Shaojing, Xiaohui Ye,
Jiahui Chen dan Li Dandan yang masing-masing
selama 2 bulan akan melakukan pembinaan
lingkungan hidup di sekolah-sekolah di
Surabaya dan sekitarnya bersama Tunas Hijau.
Kesan yang didapat bukan karena ini adalah
kesempatan pertama bagi mereka mengunjungi
surat kabar harian di Indonesia.

Surabaya, Kamis (23/7). Setelah balon
mengembang cukup besar, balon pun diberikan
pada Salsabila untuk diikatkan pada tangkai
plastik. Kemas tidak sendirian meniup balon
tersebut dengan mulut. Ada juga Yuliantoro,
ayah finalis Puteri LH 2009 Farah Dilla.
Ikut pula beberapa aktivis Tunas Hijau dan
mahasiswa China simpatisan Tunas Hijau.

Nasional tidak harus sekolah yang memiliki
lahan yang luas. SDN Petemon XIII Surabaya
bukti nyatanya. Awal Juni 2009, sekolah yang
berada di perkampungan padat kawasan Simo
Sidomulyo ini mendapat penghargaan sebagai
Sekolah Adiwiyata Nasional 2009 dari Menteri
Negara Lingkungan Hidup dan Menteri
Pendidikan Nasional.

Tanam Mangrove di
Sekitar Bozem Wonorejo dan Bersih-Bersih
Sampah di Muara Sungai Wonorejo
Pippin Barry, pemuda simpatisan Tunas Hijau
dari Melbourne, Australia, nampak cekatan
menanam Mangrove atau Bakau di
sekitar Bozem Wonorejo Surabaya, Sabtu
(18/7) pagi. Dengan berbekal batang pohon
mati berdiameter sekitar 7 cm, Pippin terus
membuat lubang tanam di atas tanah
berlumpur, di pinggiran anak sungai yang
bermuara ke Sungai Wonorejo Surabaya.
Kedalaman lubang yang dibuat Pippin sekitar
15 cm dengan diameter sekitar 11 cm. Selesai
lubang dibuat, Pippin memasukkan bibit
tanaman Mangrove jenis Tinjang dan
mengikatnya pada potongan bambu yang
berfungsi sebagai penyangga. Namun,
sebelumnya, Pippin melepas polybag
atau plastik pembungkus akar tanaman.

sekitar 90 siswa baru SMA Dharma Wanita
Surabaya, Jumat (17/7), aktivis senior Tunas Hijau Bram
Azzaino dan Mochamad Zamroni mengajak
mengurangi jejak karbondioksida (Carbon
Footprint). Ajakan ini diawali dengan
penjelasan bahwa pepohonan di bumi ini
semakin berkurang, sedangkan karbondioksida
(CO2) semakin banyak dihasilkan manusia.
“CO2 yang semakin banyak terdapat di muka
bumi ini tidak hanya dihasilkan melalui
aktivitas pernafasan manusia,” kata Zamroni
dilanjutkan dengan meminta para siswa
merasakan daya panas CO2 dengan meletakkan
telunjuknya di depan hidung masing-masing.

Ajak Peserta MOS SMK
Mater Amabilis Kurangi Jejak Karbondioksida
Setelah sehari sebelumnya berbagi tentang
isu nomor satu abad ini, yaitu pemanasan
global dan perubahan iklim, Tunas Hijau
mengajak sekitar 200 peserta Masa Orientasi
Siswa (MOS) SMKK Mater Amabilis Surabaya
untuk mengingat gaya hidup selama ini.
Bersama aktivis senior Tunas Hijau Bram
Azzaino, Mochamad Zamroni menjelaskan bahwa
perilaku kita sangat berpengaruh pada isu
pemanasan global dan perubahan iklim.
”Perilaku itu terutama berhubungan dengan
empat hal, yaitu pohon, transportasi,
listrik dan sampah,” kata Zamroni pada
peserta MOS SMKK Mater Amabilis, Kamis
(16/7).

siswa-siswi SMA Santa Maria Surabaya kelas
XI berkumpul di bangsal olahraga. Mereka
bukan sedang berlatih basket ataupun olah
raga lainnya, namun mereka tampak serius
menyelesaikan beberapa media presentasi
mereka tentang kondisi TPA (Tempat
Pembuangan Akhir Sampah) Benowo Surabaya,
Rabu (15/7). Media presentasi tersebut
terdiri dari 5 macam, yakni poster, komik
pendek, presentasi power point, film
dokumenter dan jingle atau yel-yel
atau lagu pendek kelompok.

This morning I arrived at Santa Maria and
saw Jesus welcoming me into his realm of
learning. Sugeng bears a strange resemblance
to the holy son that many find
disconcerting. The students were busy at
work when I entered the room. The guy who
was there yesterday was talking to them, in
Indonesian, and I took a seat. Then, for
about the 100th time since I've
been here, he turns to me and says “now you
can speak.”... I think to myself 'I have no
idea what they've been talking about or what
we are here for but sure.'

This morning I went to the SMK Mater
Amabilis Surabaya. This is a catholic senior
high school. Some of the students there can
speak really good English. I had a nice chat
with them during the break time. Roni gave
them a presentation about environmental
issues. The presentation is excellent and
students act actively during the
presentation. We also showed them some
videos relating to the environmental
protection. The students there watched them
carefully and hopefully these videos will
leave them an impression on being
environmentally friendly.

Kaget Dengan Gunungan Sampah Yang Ada

matahari TPA (Tempat Penampungan Akhir
Sampah) Benowo Surabaya menyambut kedatangan
rombongan siswa kelas XI SMA Santa Maria
Surabaya yang berjumlah sekitar 50 siswa.
Kunjungan siswa SMA Santa Maria Surabaya ke
TPA Benowo, Selasa (14/7), merupakan
lanjutan program pembinaan siswa kelas XI
bersama Tunas Hijau selama
tiga hari yang diadakan 13-15 Juli 2009.
Tidak seorang pun siswa SMA Santa Maria
Surabaya mengeluh dan tidak melanjutkan
observasi tentang TPA Benowo tersebut.

Surabaya yang akan melakukan observasi di
sekitar pantai Nambangan Kenjeran Surabaya.
Kunjungan siswa ke pantai Nambangan Kenjeran,
Selasa (14/7), merupakan lanjutan kegiatan
pembinaan lingkungan hidup siswa selama tiga
hari yang diadakan 13-15 Juli 2009. Kondisi
cuaca sangat terik hari itu tidak
menyurutkan semangat siswa SMA Santa Maria
Surabaya untuk melakukan kegiatan tentang
pantai.

Clean Up
Rubbish & Planting Mangrove at Wonorejo
Estuary Surabaya

Today I went with the students from Santa
Maria to plant some mangroves at the local
estuary. We start at 8 am and have to bring
the bamboo stilts with us. I meet the
students at the bosom of the river and we
divide up the mangroves to carry between us.
It is an hour walk to the planting site and
along the way we do observation of the local
fish and shrimp farms.

Doing
Activities on Kenjeran Beach Surabaya

This morning we went to the Kenjeran
beach. Unfortunately, the beach is far away
from my imagination about beach. A large
amount of rubbishes cover the beach. Our job
is to clean the beach. Students carry big
bags in hands and pick up plastic bags from
the beach. After half an hour, we cleaned
almost most of the plastic bags covering on
the beach. However, I don’t think this kind
of cleaning is enough. If the residents
living nearby are not conscious of the
environmental protection, our job is
meaningless because they will throw new
rubbishes on the beach.

Pembekalan Lingkungan Hidup di SMA Santa
Maria Surabaya
Hari pertama masuk sekolah biasanya
dimanfaatkan oleh pihak sekolah dan OSIS
(Organisasi Siswa Intra Sekolah) tersebut
untuk memperkenalkan kondisi sekolah kepada
siswa-siswi baru. Masa ini biasanya disebut
Masa Orientasi Siswa (MOS). Namun, agaknya
hal itu sedikit berbeda dengan yang
dilakukan oleh SMA Santa Maria Surabaya. Di
saat sekolah lain hanya sibuk menggelar MOS
untuk siswa baru, di SMA Santa Maria selain
MOS untuk siswa barunya, juga ada pembinaan
bagi kelas XI dalam bidang lingkungan hidup.
Pembinaan tersebut dilakukan selama 3 (tiga)
hari yakni mulai 13-15 Juli 2009.

Isu LH Pada Siswa Baru SMP Negeri 1 Kota
Malang
Masa Orientasi Siswa (MOS) biasanya diisi
dengan memperkenalkan kondisi sekolah, tata
tertib, dan pendukung proses belajar
mengajar lainnya. Namun, pada MOS di SMP
Negeri 1 Kota Malang, Tunas Hijau diberi

MARIA SURABAYA, in order to give the
presentation about the environment issues.
We were dividing into four teams. Including
the landfill, the river, the beach and the
mangroves. I were in the river team with
Bram and Afif.

Information About Mangrove Conservation

Today I was assigned to join the Mangrove
Project with Pippin and will go to the
Mangrove plant with senior high school SMA
Santa Maria Surabaya students tomorrow. We
gave a presentation of the mangrove
including what is mangrove, the importance
of protecting them, how to plant mangrove
and so forth. In addition, in order to
improve the awareness of students and
encourage them to know more knowledge, we
played a game during the presentation.

Environment Giant Snake Ladder at Orchid

 It
was Sunday today and my activity today is to
go to Batu and play with the kids. It was a
freezing cold day, we arrived at Royal
Orchid Garden in Batu very early. The game
we prepare for the kids today is Snake and
Ladder, we brought a large clothes and there
is drawing of the game on it. There was not
so many people when we arrived, so Nizam,
Elgha, Tria and me played the game for the
first time. Later, the kids came and we
played with them. The kids were very happy,
especially when someone was the first to
finish the game.

 Sulphurous
gas fills the air, we gasp for breath, the
chalky soil slides under our feet and we
tumble towards the acid lake. Welcome to
Kawah Ijen one of the natural wonders of
Java. This Volcano formed a crater lake that
turned a chemical blue due to sulphur
deposits. Pasquelle and I have taken the
trip to see this marvel and explore the
local area. But before we get our brush with
fate on the edge of the crater, we should go
back to how we got there in the first place.

After a terrible trip in the car for the
whole night, we arrived at the beach of
Jogja. The spray is very high. Little people
came here because there is nothing but
gravel on the beach and market near the
beach. There is also a fresh water pool
which cost 1000 for one person.

Pemuda Jepang Takeuhi Hideki nampak sangat
menarik perhatian lebih dari 50 peserta
International Food & Culture pada sesi
berbagi kebudayaan, Jumat (10/7), di ruang
pertemuan sebelah Pool Site Hotel Bisanta
Bidakara. Kemampuan Takeuhi Hideki ini
diawali dengan pakaian khas Jepang Kimono
yang digunakan saat itu lengkap dengan
asesorisnya. Asesoris yang dimaksud adalah
sandal dari kayu yang menyerupai kelompen.
Ada juga handuk bergambar pemandangan alam
di Jepang dari kain tipis.

kejadian menarik dari pelaksanaan
International Food & Culture yang
digelar oleh paguyuban Pangeran & Puteri LH
2009 di Hotel Bisanta Bidakara Surabaya,
Jumat (10/7). Meskipun rasa makanan yang
dibuat sedikit aneh karena merupakan masakan
khas negara lain, namun hal itu tidak
mengurangi niatan peserta International
Food & Culture untuk mencicipi
makanan-makanan tersebut. Bahkan begitu
semangatnya mereka mencicipi makanan-makanan
tersebut, sampai-sampai mereka rela
berdesakan dengan peserta lain.

Mereka pun meminta para peserta yang

simpatik Anti Udara Kotor di Terminal
Joyoboyo Surabaya, Minggu (5/7), menjadi
daya tarik tersendiri bagi masyarakat. Daya
tarik ini disebabkan kedua pemuda yang 2
bulan magang di Tunas Hijau itu memiliki
penampilan yang berbeda dari kebanyakan
orang yang lalu lalang di terminal. Mereka
memiliki warna kulit dan rambut layaknya
disebut bule atau wisatawan dari luar
negeri, karena memang mereka lahir dan besar
di negaranya...

Anti Udara Kotor di Terminal Joyoboyo, Aksi
Simpatik Membuat Mural Lingkungan Hidup dan
Bersih-Bersih Sampah
 Sedikitnya
50 orang melakukan aksi simpatik di terminal
Joyoboyo, Surabaya, Minggu (5/7) pagi hingga
siang tadi. Kelima puluh orang itu adalah
siswa SD, SMP dan SMA yang tergabung dalam
Tunas Hijau. Nampak juga pemuda simpatisan
Tunas Hijau Pasquella van der Jagt dari
Belanda dan Pippin Barry dari Australia.
Pada aksi yang dimotori oleh paguyuban
Pangeran dan Puteri Lingkungan Hidup 2009
ini mereka menghias beberapa dinding dan pot
tanaman terminal Joyoboyo dengan lukisan
atau mural bertema lingkungan hidup.
Bersih-bersih sampah juga dilakukan pada
aksi simpatik Anti Udara Kotor itu.

Almost
Lost In Air Plane In My Journey From China
to Indonesia

 It’s
a long long journey from China to Indonesia,
after which I started to believe that
miracles will happen in my life. I take the
flight from Beijing to Hangzhou, in China,
then Hangzhou to Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia,
then from Kuala Lumpur to Surabaya.
Unluckily, my flight from Beijing to
Hangzhou was late due to the bad weather. As
a result, I didn’t catch the next two
flights. I bought the tickets again. I
finally arrived at Kuala Lumpur, finishing
my check-in at the airport, sitting in the
plane to Surabaya.

Journey From China to Indonesia

 On
June 28th,2009, I flied from
Beijing (the capital of China) to Hangzhou
(another city of China). The weather was so
bad that the flight was delayed. The plane
did not set up until 7:00pm and I was
worrying about whether I could catch the
next flight to Malaysia. But it is lucky
that I finally catch the flight in time but
my friend who is to go with me together
could not arrive before the plane leave for
KL. Therefore I should go for my journey to
Indonesia alone which was the first time to
go abroad.

Mahasiswa China Yu Shuting dan QinHao Yang
Akan Membantu Kegiatan Tunas Hijau di Malang
Selama 2 Bulan
 Setelah
sekitar 30 menit menunggu, Sabtu (4/7) siang,
akhirnya datang juga mahasiswa dari China,
yaitu Yu Shuting dan QinHao.
Kemudian
mereka duduk dan memperkenalkan diri dengan
ditemani anggota AIESEC LC Universitas
Brawijaya Malang Rahman, Ninda dan Fika.
Setelah perkenalan, aktivis Tunas Hijau
Nizam Wahyu Ardhika dan Elgha Kasanda
memperkenalkan diri dan menjelaskan apa saja
yang akan dikerjakan di Tunas Hijau Malang.

Workshop Pengolahan
Sampah Basah di SMP Negeri 39 Surabaya
Semangat
untuk meningkatkan kualitas lingkungan hidup
di sekolah yang dimiliki anggota tim
lingkungan hidup SMP Negeri 39 Surabaya
patut dicontoh siswa sekolah lain. Di saat
semua siswa menikmati liburan bersama
keluarga, tim lingkungan SMP Negeri 39
Surabaya yang berjumlah sekitar 15 orang
masih menyisihkan waktu datang ke sekolah
untuk mengikuti workshop pengolaan sampah
daun yang diadakan Tunas Hijau, Kamis (2/7).

Melakukan Pengolahan Sampah Daun di Hutan
SMPN 16 Surabaya
 SMP
Negeri 16 Surabaya mendapat suntikan
motivasi untuk melanjutkan program
lingkungan hidup di sekolahnya, Rabu (1/7).
Di saat liburan sekolah seperti ini, sekolah
yang berlokasi di Mastrip Bogangin Surabaya
ini kedatangan tamu empat orang pemuda cewek
dari empat negara. Keempat pemuda itu adalah
simpatisan Tunas Hijau. Mereka adalah
Pasquella van der Jagt dari Belanda, Sun Yi
Feng atau biasa dipanggil Ivone dari China,
Li Dan Dan dari Hongkong, dan Mandy Lim Pei
Mun dari Malaysia. Keempat simpatisan Tunas
Hijau itu didampingi aktivis senior Tunas
Hijau Mochamad Zamroni dan Afif Amrullah.

SMP 16 Surabaya With Composting Program

Today we went to SMP 16
Surabaya.
This is one of the nicest schools we have
ever been. There are a lot of sansiviera
in the school. According to the students
there, sansivara is the symbol of their
school. This is a kind of tough plant. They
can grow everywhere, even where there is no
light. They also have a lot of advantages,
for example, they can absorb smelly gas.
Despite of some small gardens, this school
also has a small forest. There are some
trees there. Students use the leaves on the
ground to make
compost.

Puteri LH 2009 Dengan Impian Lingkungan
Untuk Surabaya
 Bagi
Runner Up Puteri Lingkungan Hidup
2009 Nyimas Salsabila Rahma Indah Zahra atau
biasa dipanggil Caca, mengikuti puncak
peringatan Hari Lingkungan Hidup Sedunia di
Jawa Timur di Arboretrum, Desa Sumber
Brantas, Kecamatan Bumiaji, Kota Batu
memiliki kesan tersendiri. Kesan tersebut
bukan karena kesempatan pertama bagi Caca
untuk bertatap muka dengan Gubernur Jawa
Timur Soekarwo yang baru beberapa bulan
menjabat. Namun, kesan yang dimaksud adalah
kondisi lingkungan hidup di desa yang
merupakan sumber utama sungai Brantas itu.
